Deer Tick Miami Gardens Concert reviews
Total Disappointment
The talented Deer Tick is squandering her skills with crude attempts at humor.
What?
Isn't that what Deer Tick excels at?
Well, no.
The Deer Tick I anticipated seeing in Durham this past Friday night was the sharp-tongued, quick witted, true-to-life comedian - even if she did spew out slang for bodily fluids and depicted repulsive images of family, friends, and The Almighty.
I hoped she would be amusing, but she simply wasn't. I waited for it, but it never materialized.
I chuckled because I wanted to, my laughter was present. Deer Tick was present. I was present. The comedy, however, remained in the hotel room for a cigarette or perhaps stubbornly clung to the notepad she read from during half the show - an aspect that was quite distracting and unprofessional.
While the elements of her performance were on point and her delivery was exceptional, she just wasn't delivering much humor.
She was provocatively and offensively obscene without being amusing.
She failed to captivate the sold-out crowd - evident from the absence of a standing ovation at the end and the swift exit like few I have witnessed for similar Carolina Theater comedy shows, with no smiles or buzz as people left, except for a faint "get me out of here" chant that I softly muttered under my breath when I first rose from my seat as the house lights finally brightened.
The final 40 minutes of the performance were excruciating, and I almost drifted off to sleep. The controversial topics of abortion, God, sex, and menstruation are ideal for Deer Tick to showcase her talents. However, she relentlessly hammered them to blank expressions and thoughts of requesting ticket refunds.
The silver lining is that this girl is talented, a super talent - she just failed to demonstrate it to us.
